Adware or Spyware
Beware of Pop-up Generated Downloads
Canadian Web Source tries to search for different types of software and resources, that are both useful, and user friendly.
Many of the resources we present in our newsletter are often times free.
It is getting more and more difficult, however, to find download sites that don't bombard you with pop-ups, offering anything from Credit Cards, Celeb Wear, Kids wear, Surveys to choose the Sexiest Hollywood Actor, or finding lost classmates. Most of these offers are sales pitches, geared to entice you into buying their product of choice. As annoying as some of these ads are, I am not one to begrudge anyone trying to make a (hopefully) honest dollar.
There are, however, certain pop-ups that, upon clicking, will automatically begin to download unwanted software on to an unsuspecting user's personal computer. Some of these types of software are both useful and fun to use, however, some are also considered to be Adware or Spyware.
'Spyware' and 'adware' aren't always synonymous. The difference is important for everyone to understand. Here is an interesting article by Delcan Dunn that will help you differentiate between the two.
